because a cloture file was submitted by harry reid. do you think -- you said that the democrats are embarrassed, but is it republicans are embarrassed to support one of their own because chuck hagel did not support the iraq surge? is this basically trying to settle an old score? >> well, i don't see it that way at all. i think you took a look at chuck hagel's entire history in terms of his opposition to sanctions against iran. different things he's written about disarmament including unilateral disarmament. i think he's the wrong person for this position. and anybody that watched the hearngs in just the past week knows that this man is not prepared to be secretary of defense in terms of making sure we as a nation remain strong and able to defend ourselves in all situations. >> even though in his testimony, america has and must maintain the strong esmil tear in the world that we must lead the international community to confront challenges today and must use tools of american power to protect our citizens and our interests. do you think

reid, and mitch mcconnell. you would think maybe he could grab them on the side of the rosa parks statue right now and bring this up. they're all together. so it's the first time in years, though, this year that the president has a face-to-face meeting with republican leaders where they will directly discuss sequestration. i say again he's right there. this is a good moment. they're all applauding. why not talk about it now? we bring in today's political power panel. what do you think? why not talk about it now? can we put the shot back up? you know, they're all together now. why not talk about it? >> there we have it. this is a good moment. they are all together, all the people being called on the carpet to get us out of this sequestration mess. mark madness is happening. sequestration. we're going through it and no one has the brackets. let me start with you. as we look at the people involved in the meeting we've got boehner, pelosi, reid, mcconnell. we know last week the president reached out via phone call

reid? it seems to be the honous is on you. >> there are republicans and democrats needing to talk about bipartisan consensus on background. chec checks. i think we can get some of that consensus as well. senator rubio and others who say that the proposals on the table wouldn't have changed what happened in newtown are wrong. they are absolutely wrong. if that young man didn't have 30 round ammunition magazines, there would be little boys and girls alive. i'm not the only one that believes that. the families of the kids believe that as well. the fact is that these have become weapons o of mass destruction. they give a false sense of courage to these mass murders who might not walk into these schools and religious institutions and movie theaters if they didn't have the fault weapon in the first place. and without those clips if they walk in, they wouldn't do as much damage. these people who say that these changes and laws wouldn't have made a difference in newtown, they don't know the facts.

senator harry reid and the democrats in the senate can make folks like blunt have to vote on gun control. they can make them have to vote on universal background checks. that gets harder in the house, although once the senate does pass something, if it does pass something, it is it get hard for the house to simply ignore it. so more so i think than even president obama's national speeches can force attention on this so they can, the way they're actually going to make -- the way that democrats can actually make republicans have to make a yes or no decision on gun control itself is to bring it to the floor of the senate and force them to actually vote yes or no. >> let's take a look at the money in the background of all of this. your colleague, chris solicited how the nra spent $32 million in the 2012 campaign and only spent $1 million in direct contributions, spent $25 million on outside spending, which includes political campaign ads. and the remaining $6 million on federal lobbying. can gun control lobbists like the former congresswoman, gabby giffords and her husband, started their own

we haven't seen a solution from the president or harry reid. the republicans have put our plan on the table and passed it through the house of representatives. now it is incumbent upon the president to show leadership. >> let's turn to hagel. the nomination of course something taken up once the break is over. this is bob woodward on fox news talking about democratic senators calling the white house asking if hagel was going to withdraw. this is what he said was the white house response. >> the answer is an emphatic no. remember john urlicman used to talk about twisting slowly in the wind. >> why wouldn't the white house jump to hagel's defense? >> i think they have. had john mccain out this weekend. the expectation is that senator hagel is going to -- that vote is going to happen and he will be our next secretary of defense. what i think is deplorable and john mccain was very honest this weekend and part of what prompted some of democrat's questions. republicans made it clear this is a grudge match. lindsey graham is saying he is not going to v

it was harry reid who called this vote as sort of an attempt to call their bluff saying this is enough, you're delaying this for no reason but i don't think this is going to help the republicans' image especially when they're going around saying we're not actually trying to stop this nomination. we're not actually filibustering, so what are they doing? i think especially for people who are sick of the sort of washington games, this isn't a good image for them. >> jake, let's talk about this break that congress is on. house speaker nancy pelosi blamed republicans for not using this time more productively. take a listen. >> they manufactured the crisis and instead of having us try to avert that crisis they go on a nine-day recess. why? ? why? people outside the congress are saying no deal, no break. >> why, jake, why? >> nancy pelosi did similar things when she had control but that simplifies a complicated issue. democrats and republicans and the president are miles apart when it comes to averting the sequester. democrats want to raise taxes. republicans say they don't want any new taxes
